Speaker Session: “Empowering Community: A Museum’s Role in Economic Revitalization” with Lord Senior Consultant Natalie Bornstein and Baye Adofo-Wilson, BAW Development.

In the early summer of 2023, one of the last remaining stadiums where the Negro Leagues baseball games were played reopened to great fanfare. Through community efforts, public-private partnerships, and sheer determination, the site surrounding this deteriorating local and national treasure was (re)developed, the stadium was restored, and a new regional museum was created to highlight a forgotten past. In this flash session, explore the many facets of the (re)development process with the project leaders.

Workshop: “Toward a More Human Museum: Trust and Well-being for Staff and Visitors” with Gail Lord (Lord Co-founder), Susie Wilkening (Wilkening Consulting), Lisa Biagas (Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts), John Hampton (Mackenzie Art Gallery), Christy Coleman (Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation)

In the current political climate, the work museums are doing to become more human and empathic may be misunderstood both internally and externally, and the latest data by a leading museum research consulting firm already indicates a lowering of public trust in museums. In this session, panelists and attendees will explore the relationship between public trust and the changes the museum field is making, using examples from various types of museums to understand how we can better formulate policies and communicate while building trust among staff, visitors, and non-visitors.
