Ball's Falls Centre for Conservation

The Ball's Falls Conservation Area, operated by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA), is found atop of the Niagara Escarpment, a designated World Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Situated in a picturesque setting of wildlife, greenery and waterfalls, it is a historically significant site, telling the story of regional industrial development in the 19^th century.

Lord Cultural Resources, in partnership with Mystus Exhibits, was engaged to provide planning, design and curatorial services for this 1,500 square foot gallery. The new Ball’s Falls Centre is nestled on a hilltop overlooking the site. Every attempt was made to incorporate this building into its surrounding area. With LEED Gold Certification, the building continues the bridge between human interaction and nature. Sustainable features of the building include using local materials, incorporating native species in its landscaping and a geo-thermal heating system. Housing galleries and exhibitions, the Ball’s Falls Centre for Conservation will act as a gateway to the many experiences that visitors can explore at the site, serving as a catalyst to discovery, connection and understanding. In particular, the Centre explores the natural environment, human habitation and the interrelationships that exist between them. Key components of a healthy watershed and strategies for adopting sustainable lifestyles are presented in a number of fun, hands-on and multimedia displays.

The Ball's Falls Centre for Conservation opened its doors on Friday May 8, 2008.
