Tunisia: Carthage, Jerba, Kairouan, Sousse

The project was part of a World Bank loan financed programme designed to improve and upgrade the conservation and presentation of Tunisia’s cultural heritage to a standard that will have an impact on the country’s economy through sustainable growth in cultural tourism. Within the main project were four sub-projects in different locations. Our work included planning the future development of Carthage’s Musée Archéologique de Carthage Byrsa (World Heritage Site), and the Musée des Arts Traditionnels et Populaires on the Island of Jerba. At the Musée Archéologique de Sousse (World Heritage Site), Lord Cultural Resources’ recommendations called for the reorganisation and restoration of the Ottoman Palace. At Kairouan (World Heritage Site), Lord Cultural Resources planned the layout of an interpretation centre adjacent to the Great Mosque.

For each site Lord Cultural Resources followed an initial analysis of the collections and existing buildings with a detailed market analysis leading to a facilities strategy including a space programme, access, adjacency and circulation diagrams, and building systems and standards. Lord Cultural Resources’s work also included a review of staffing requirements and organizational structures, and the development of interpretive concepts to inform the exhibition designers.
