BMW Guggenheim Lab

2012-13

The BMW Guggenheim Lab is a worldwide experimental and interactive exhibition program that BMW is sponsoring and the Guggenheim Foundation is organizing for temporary showings in cities around the world. Mumbai was the third such Lab, following successful examples in New York and Berlin. The Lab was presented in Mumbai in collaboration with the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum.

Opening in Mumbai on December 9, 2012 and continuing until January 20, 2013, the Mumbai Lab’s programs included design projects, participatory studies, tours, talks, workshops, film screenings, and cultural activities. Creative and hands-on activities brought the public together with design professionals, city officials, and urban planners to address issues related to transportation, housing, water, and governance. In addition, city tours explored the psychological effects of public space. Design projects included an open competition to develop solutions for a heavily congested traffic junction in Mumbai and an exploration of ways to refit infrastructure with new public space and pedestrian functions.

Lord Cultural Resources assisted the Guggenheim Foundation by providing support in project implementation and administered the architectural competition on Rethinking the Kalanagar Traffic Junction.
