Project Experience
Fort Monroe
Lord Cultural Resources was invited to participate on a team led by Sasaki Associates to develop a Master Plan for Fort Monroe, a recently decommissioned U.S. Army base on a site with 400 years of historical significance, just outside Hampton, Virginia. Working collaboratively with the consultant team, the Fort Monroe Authority and its partner the National Park Service (the latter two which share ownership and responsibility for the site) Lord Cultural Resources facilitated public engagement meetings and activities to understand gaps in cultural offerings in the area and the public’s needs, wants and perceptions regarding the fort.
Based on this information as well as the historical and practical considerations relating to the site, Lord Cultural Resources developed a cultural strategy for Fort Monroe that will: celebrate the historic assets of Fort Monroe: invigorate Fort Monroe’s network of attractions and venues, nurture Hampton’s future cultural leaders, artists, volunteers and audiences; support culture as an engine for a creative economy, attracting and retaining professional residents; and, position culture as an integral part of the municipality’s responsibilities. The governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia ratified the master plan in Fall 2013.
