The Bakken Museum

2015-16

The Bakken in Minneapolis Minnesota is the world's first and only museum and library devoted to medical electricity and electromagnetism. It was founded by inventor Earl Bakken who was inspired when very young by a movie version of Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein. He grew up to build the first portable and implantable cardiac pacemakers and founded the biomedical technology company Medtronic in 1949. Medtronic was an incubator for more than 30 other biomedical companies leading to the growth of Minnesota’s Medical Alley, home to the world's most concentrated health technology cluster made up of medical device, biopharmaceutical, diagnostic and digital health industry leaders.

Lord Cultural Resources was engaged to prepare a strategic and business plan that seeks to diversify the funding base of the Bakken. This included recommendations for increased earned and contributed income based on widening the mission of and concept for the museum, and a variety of other strategic directions and approaches that address such issues as admission charges, membership, rentals and the composition of the Board.
