Thunder Bay Art Gallery

2017

The new expanded home for the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, situated on the downtown waterfront, is described as a visitor-oriented and exhibition driven museum of art for the people of Thunder Bay. With its stated focus on contemporary Aboriginal art, the goal of the design is to both act as a catalyst for revitalization and economic development in the City’s north core.

In 2017, the Lord Cultural Resources’ Facilities Planning team was retained by Patkau Architects and Brook McIlroy Architects on behalf of the Thunder Bay Art Gallery to complete a comprehensive architectural plan and program review, to provide options for art storage systems and report on recent trends and technology opportunities for digital art exhibitions. Completed during the schematic design phase, the plan and program review provided recommendations on the right-sizing of programmed spaces as well as alternate planning strategies for improved museum functionality.
